Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights hosted a two-day high-level event on December 11-12, 2023.

This gathering brought together member states, civil society organizations, UN agencies, and academics to collectively reflect on this historical milestone and envision the path forward in advancing human rights.

Leading up to this milestone celebration, UPR Info launched a social media campaign showcasing how UPR recommendations contributed to the advancement of human rights enshrined in the UDHR.

The high-level event culminated in the 'Push for Pledges' campaign, a global initiative that saw an impressive response, with over 148 pledges collected, offering a comprehensive overview of prevailing trends and highlighting areas of common focus and oversight. UPR Info actively took part in the 'Push for Pledges' campaign, reaffirming its commitment to the principles embedded in the UDHR.

In acknowledging the complexities and interconnected nature of human rights challenges, UPR Info's pledge goes beyond anti-discrimination principles. Embracing the spirit of Article 2 of the UDHR, which states that "everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set out in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind". UPR Info recognizes that human rights challenges are complex and interconnected. By incorporating intersectionality into our initiatives, we aim to address the diverse and interconnected dimensions of human rights ensuring a more inclusive participation in the UPR.

UPR Info committed to:

  • Enhance implementation of human rights recommendations by fostering cooperation among national and international stakeholders;

  • Build the capacity of all stakeholders to enhance their understanding of how to effectively use the UPR to protect and promote human rights at the national level;

  • Encourage the participation of communities living in vulnerable situations and marginalised in the UPR process through reporting, advocating, and engaging in the implementation;

  • Raise awareness about emerging and underrepresented human rights issues to advance the promotion and protection of the indivisibility and universality of human rights;
