South Sudan, a future State under Review?

The human rights situation in South Sudan was one of the highlights of Sudan's Universal Periodic Review on May 10. Following the referendum held last January, South Sudan is expected to become independent on July the 9th.

Sudan's 33 pages long National report was divided into two parts and dedicated ten pages to the human rights situation in the South.

Similarly, Sudan's delegation contained representatives from the Government of the South. One of them, Mr. Angok Daniel, was given the floor at the end of the review to respond to questions made on this region.

Finally, during the interactive dialogue, States made specific recommendations to South Sudan. Norway, France and Italy addressed the issues of democracy, civil protection, child soldiers and death penalty.

Without doubt, South Sudan will be the 193rd State under Review at the second cycle of the UPR.
