  • [UPR Trax] :No25: Tentative deadline for stakeholders submission at session 13 (June 2012)

    From 21st to 23rd September, the Human Rights Council will adopt the Reports of the Working Group of States reviewed during session 11 held last May. Those countries include, in order of adoption: Belgium, Denmark, Palau, Somalia, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Latvia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Suriname, Greece, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sudan, Hungary and Papua New Guinea. So far only three States (Greece, Palau and Singapore) have presented an addendum containing their responses to recommendations. As South Sudan has become an independent State since the review of Sudan last May, it remains unclear what will become of the recommendations made by Norway, France and Italy on the issues of democracy, civil protection, child soldiers and death penalty addressed specifically to South Sudan.

  • [UPR Trax] :No24: Human Rights Council adopts new modalities for the second UPR cycle

    From June 7 to 9, the Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted the Working Group Reports of States reviewed last January at the tenth UPR session: Nauru, Rwanda, Nepal, Saint Lucia, Oman, Austria, Myanmar, Australia, Georgia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sao Tome and Principe, Namibia, Niger, Mozambique, Estonia and Paraguay. A record of 14 States out of 16 submitted an addendum containing their responses to the recommendations. The delegation of Myanmar rejected 22 recommendations because it considered that they were infringing their sovereign rights.

  • [UPR Trax] :No23: Towards a 3.5 hour Working Group Review?

    On May 13, the UPR Working Group concluded its eleventh session after reviewing Belgium, Denmark, Palau, Somalia, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Latvia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Suriname, Greece, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sudan, Hungary and Papua New Guinea. There is now only seventeen United Nations member-States left before the end of the first cycle. One of the highlights of the session was the review of Sudan. As Southern Sudan was expected to become independent on July the 9th, great attention was paid to the region.

    From March 16 to 18, the Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted the Working Group Reports of States reviewed last November at the ninth UPR session: Liberia, Malawi, Mongolia, Panama, Maldives, Andorra, Bulgaria, Honduras, United States, Marshall Islands, Croatia, Jamaica, Micronesia, Lebanon and Mauritania. Libya’s adoption was postponed to June by the HRC Bureau on March 2nd following a Note verbale sent by the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations in regards of the situation in the country.
     

  • [UPR Trax] :No21: HRC Review Outcome provides for little change on the UPR

    On Thursday, February 24, the Open-ended Working Group on the Review of the Human Rights Council (HRC) concluded its second session with the adoption of an "Outcome of the Review of the Work and Functioning of the United Nations Human Rights Council". This outcome contains modifications to resolution 5/1, as well as new modalities for the work and functioning of the HRC. The outcome was adopted by consensus in the late hours of Thursday, February 24, the last day of the Working Group after several months of negotiations and meetings.
