UPR Info co-organises a CSO strategy workshop in Kenya

On 10-12 March 2015, UPR Info, along with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), organised the “CSO strategy workshop on implementation of UPR recommendations”.

During the three-day workshop, Kenyan civil society members discussed their experiences with the UPR mechanism from 2010 to 2015; reviewed the recommendations that Kenya received in the 2015 UPR; wrote an implementation plan to propose solutions for how the recommendations should be implemented; and outlined an action strategy to identify advocacy activities to ensure UPR implementation.

The workshop was attended by dozens of civil society representatives working on issues such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), transgender people’s rights, women’s empowerment, rights of the child, access to health, right to food, access to safe drinking water and sanitation, rights of  indigenous and pastoralist communities, torture, justice and reconciliation, freedom of expression, etc. It was a unique opportunity for NGOs to further discuss how cooperation can improve the human rights situation in Kenya.
“CSO strategy workshop on implementation of UPR recommendations” is the first step of UPR Info’s follow-up activities in Kenya. A similar workshop was held in Armenia in February 2015 and more such workshops will be organised in four other countries this year.

In order to develop its activities in Africa, UPR Info will be opening a regional office in Nairobi soon. Check our website regularly for updates.
