Digital Innovation and Knowledge Management (DIKM) Programme

dikm4

Since 2019, UPR Info has expanded the scope of its activities online to reinforce the capacities of human rights stakeholders engaged in the UPR. Our organisation began using digital tools to carry out activities in virtual environments which are easily accessible to its beneficiaries. The pandemic accelerated this process.

Digital technologies and innovation are increasingly critical to the advancement of human rights and the creation of inclusive knowledgeable societies. With this conviction, UPR Info adapted its training programmes, which transitioned from face-to-face interaction to online exchanges. On the one hand, UPR Info started developing modules that facilitate distant learning. On the other hand, it improved access to information on the UPR mechanism through its website and social platforms.

Digital transformation implies embracing innovation and developing creative ways of transferring knowledge. It cannot be limited to enhancing and supporting traditional methods with new technology tools. As a result, UPR Info is committed to adjust its organisational culture to an innovative and digital way of working, in order to achieve its goals.

Two objectives

The Digital Innovation and Knowledge Management (DIKM) Programme has two main objectives:

  • Facilitate access to information about the UPR (as a human rights monitoring mechanism);

  • Foster knowledge exchange to improve the effective realisation of human rights.
Three Components

Currently, the DIKM programme integrate the following components:

  • A website supporting innovative ways to ensure increased outreach and real-time access to practical and updated information on the UPR;
  • An e-learning platform which promotes learning and knowledge exchange through self-paced  interactive training modules;
  • A database which provides access to all UPR recommendations in order to empower human rights defenders to conduct their advocacy activities.

UPR Info Website

UPR Info’s new website eases access to information on the UPR mechanism. It presents UPR Info programmes and provides information to UPR stakeholders allowing them to engage meaningfully along the UPR process to promote human rights.

UPR Info e-HUB

UPR Info e-Hub

Our e-learning platform aims not only to ease access to technical tools, but also to build a wide and inclusive community of best practises. The goal is for UPR stakeholders to learn from each other and amplify the scope of their actions. To this end, the platform will be accessible, in particular to selected Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), and Government representatives.

The online training tools will be divided into five modules to guide users through the UPR cycle while emphasising the basics of the mechanism as well as advocacy, monitoring and reporting actions aimed at implementing UPR recommendations.

In the future, we expect to develop specific courses targeting groups such as Youth, human rights defenders, among others. We also intend to offer Training of Trainers (ToT) courses and thematic sessions, for instance on economic, social, and cultural rights.

These modules will enhance active and participatory learning by using an integrated approach and reflecting the UPR mechanism’s spirit of sharing best practices amongst stakeholders.

This log-in platform will deliver accessible capacity-building activities to a wide audience. Its innovative curriculum will also enable stakeholders to assimilate the technical information needed to engage in long-term human rights advocacy through the UPR mechanism, thus achieving a sustainable impact.

The UPR e-HUB will be accessible only on demand and for training planned within the objectives of each UPR Info Programme.

UPR Info Database

UPR Database

UPR Info’s Database of Recommendations and Voluntary Pledges is a searchable database that allows you to explore all the recommendations and voluntary pledges made by States during the UPR of every UN Member State.

The UPR Info Database has been renewed between 2019 and 2020, in partnership with Huridocs and with the support of Google.org Fellows, to integrate smarter software facilitating more efficient human rights work.

Since its inception, UPR Info has worked to facilitate broad access to information on the UPR process. For us, it is crucial that UPR recommendations are made available to human rights advocates in a timely fashion so that they can monitor human rights trends in their countries.

“The new database is a critical tool providing to UPR stakeholders human rights information to support the advocacy, monitoring, and implementation work on UPR recommendations. It also fosters a culture of transparency and accountability by facilitating access to information”

Mona M’Bikay, UPR Info’s Executive Director

Who can benefit from UPR Info’s Database?

UPR Info’s database is a tool which can be used by all stakeholders working in the area of human rights and sustainable development: human rights advocates, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), UN Country Teams, policymakers, etc.

For States under Review (SuR), the database offers increased efficiency in implementing, monitoring, and reporting on UPR recommendations.

For Recommending States, it is a key tool to follow up on UPR recommendations formulated in the previous cycles.

For human rights advocates and other stakeholders, the database offers the opportunity to monitor and hold States accountable for human rights obligations.

The Database lets you explore more than 90,000 recommendations from de UPR.
