  • Canada

. 13th HRC session - 19 March 2010

"We already taken steps in response to our UPR. These include the recent ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We have also announced that Canada will take steps to endorse the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People in a manner consistent with our Constitution and laws."

. 14th HRC session - 11 June 2010

“Canada would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on the progress on follow-up in the implementation of Canada’s UPR. At the federal level Canada has established an inter-department Committee on the UPR which continues to lead the Federal government in his efforts to implement UPR commitments. Also we continue to consult with provincial and territorial governments on the implementation of the accepted recommendations. We have already taken steps with regard to our UPR, including the ratification, on March 11th this year, of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Also the government tabled the outcome of Canada’s UPR in our Parliament. This will ensure the full participation of parliamentarians and the civil society in the follow-up and the implementation phase. With respect to recommendations that Canada accepted relating to effective engagement with civil society, the Canadian government continue to consult civil society on human rights priorities both at the international and domestic levels. The government of Canada is examining the broad spectrum of actions that can be taken to consult and collaborate on issues related to the implementation of international human rights obligations as well as how we might enhance these mechanism. We look forward to hear a wide range of civil society views during a meeting to discuss follow-up to Canada’s UPR to take place at the earliest convenience in the coming months.”
